Takoma Park Sustainable Facelift
Takoma Park, MD
Goal:Our client purchased a home requiring a lot of work. While she focused on turning the interiors into her dream home, she asked GreenSweep to convert the overgrown and unkempt yard into an outdoor oasis. Her most important requirements were to provide off-street parking and to replace the existing lawn with as many native plants as possible.
Project:GreenSweep broke this project into two phases, to allow for space for home renovation work to continue and for a new front porch to be constructed. The first phase consisted of: demolishing the existing walkway and rebuilding it using natural Pennsylvania flagstone, carving out gravel off-street parking spots at the street, and demolishing the existing concrete retaining wall to restore the natural slope of the front yard. Our design team then worked with the client to develop a concept that filled the front yard with a broad array of native perennials, grasses and shrubs. By choosing plant material native to the Mid-Atlantic region, GreenSweep ensured the plants were already well-suited to existing climate and soil conditions, making them easy to maintain and maximizing the landscape's sustainability. A wide variety of flowering plants provides interest to butterflies, honeybees and other wildlife. The final piece of the project was the construction of a drainage swale and rain garden to correct a drainage issue in the backyard. This was also accomplished with native plants.
